The Third School of Clinical Medicine (Orthopaedic Hospital of Guangdong Province)

The Third School of Clinical Medicine was established as a secondary school of Southern Medical University (SMU) in 2019. Based on the Third Affiliated Hospital of SMU, the School, young as it is, is endeavoring to play an innovator’s role in integrating in-depth scientific research, talent training, medical care, and health management. For this objective, the School takes full advantage of SMU’s first-rate facilities and high-level faculty, especially those in the Third Affiliated Hospital, a first-class hospital known nationwide which, for decades, has been committed to providing quality medical and healthcare services to local communities in Tianhe District and its surrounding areas, the central parts of Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province.

The hospital-based School currently has 66 departments, covering 19 nationally authorized master’s and doctoral disciplines. Quite a few departments and/or disciplines are among the nationally or provincially accredited key ones. For example, the Orthopedics Department and the Department of Endocrinology & Metabolism are provincially accredited as among High-level Key Clinical Departments, the Nephrology Department as among Key Clinical Medical Departments in Guangdong Province; the Respiratory Medicine Department is nationally recognized as a standardized first-class hospital department in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM); the Cardiovascular Medicine Department is listed among the First Key Cardiac Rehabilitation Construction Units in China; the Departments of Orthopedics, Spine Surgery, Joint Surgery, Trauma & Orthopedics, Endocrinology & Metabolism, Rheumatism & Immunology were rated as among the “Top Departments in Guangdong Hospitals–2019”.

The School has a sizable high-level faculty. There are currently 176 faculty members with senior professional titles, including one distinguished professor supported by the national “Chang Jiang Program”, one distinguished young scholar sponsored by the “National Science Fund”, one professor awarded the “National Government Allowance”, and three professors supported by the “Guangdong Pearl River Scholars Program”.

The School offers its faculty and students a wide variety of high-quality academic platforms and practice opportunities. For example, it is listed among the National Health Management Demonstration Bases, and designated as the Orthopedics Remote Consultation Center in Guangdong Province; it has the Key Laboratory of Bone & Joint Degenerative Diseases, the Research Center for Bone & Soft Tissue Biomaterial Engineering Technology, the Innovation Platform for 3D Printing Biomedicine, and the Innovation Platform for Translational Medicine of Bone Diseases, the Innovation Platform for Translational Medicine of Kidney Diseases in Guangdong Province; the School is included among the National Standardized Training Bases for Resident Physicians–2017, and among the Pilot Clinical Teaching Bases for Higher Medical Education in Guangdong Province–2021; the School also has a medical experimental research center equipped with an array of advanced facilities such as micro-CT and flow cytometry (FCM), offering varying multi-functional research platforms for its faculty and students.

As a hospital-based educational establishment, the School, ever since its inception, has been taking greater social responsibilities, especially in emergency medical services. The fight against the COVID-19 is a case in point. Early in 2020, at the initial stage of the pandemic, the School immediately called together two teams consisting of some 50 medical personnel to aid Wuhan, then the epicenter of the pandemic. The first team of 12 members, headed by Captain Cheng Yuanxiong, aided the ICU of the West Campus of the Union Hospital Affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science & Technology. The team headed by Cheng had been working closely with the team headed by Academician Zhong Nanshan of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and was later awarded the honorary title as among the “National Eminent Healthcare Groups in the Prevention and Control of COVID-19”.
