
School of Health Management consists of three departments: Department of Health Management, Department of Law, and Department of Economics.

The School boasts a key research center of philosophy and social sciences in Guangdong higher institutions, and a region and country-specific research center of the Ministry of Education. The School also set up the first international research institute of health law in China.
The School can offer bachelor’s degree in Public Utility Management (Hospital Management), Public Utility Management (Health Service and Management), Law (Health Supervision and Management) and Economics (Health Economy and Medical Insurance), master’s degree in Public Management (the first-level discipline), and Public Health Policy and Management (the second-level discipline), and doctor’s degree in Public Health Policy and Management, which has formed a complete system of education for academic degrees. Social Medicine and Health Management was honored as Guangdong key discipline with characteristics, and Public Utility Management was approved as a candidate first-class discipline in Guangdong Province. The School has established intercollegiate cooperation with the University of Lisbon (Portugal) in offering doctor’s program of Public Health Policy and Management, and master’s program of Medical Health Management.

Among a total faculty and staff of 46, there are 37 full-time teachers, 7 professors and 15 associate professors. Wang Dong, Dean of the School, was awarded the title of “Inspirational Model Supervisor of Southern Medical University”.

In 2019, 4 students were enrolled in doctor’s program, 27 in master’s program, 199 in bachelor’s program and 97 in bachelor’s program as minor major. Furthermore, there are 25 doctor students recruited under the Chinese-Portuguese cooperative doctorate program of public health policy and management, and 24 graduate students studying abroad under the Chinese-Portuguese cooperative master’s program.
In 2019, there are 28 master’s graduates with an employment rate of 100%, and 165 bachelor’s graduates with an employment rate of 98%. Under the Chinese-Portuguese cooperative program, 14 have graduated with a doctor degree and 20 with a master degree.

Our teachers have presided a lot of provincial and ministerial-level projects, such as “the region and country-specific research project” funded by the Ministry of Education, the “13th Five-Year Plan” project of the Philosophy and Social Sciences of Guangdong Province, and the project commissioned by the Health Development Research Center of the National Health Commission of the PRC. There are 63 papers published, including 6 papers in SCI journals, 5 papers in CSSCI journals and 28 papers in core journals. Furthermore, the graduate students have published 15 papers in the above-mentioned journals.

In 2019, the “School of Health Management, Southern Medical University-Lisbon University College (Portugal)”, jointly sponsored by SMU and ISCTE-IUL, has finished its application of Sino-foreign cooperative education to the Ministry of Education.
