School of Laboratory Medicine and Biotechnology

Based on the Institute of Tropical Diseases and the Institute of Molecular Immunology at the Department of Tropical Military Hygiene of the First Military Medical University of PLA, the School of Biotechnology was established in June 2005. In June 2016, joined by the Department of Clinical Laboratory Medicine of the First School of Medical Medicine, the School was renamed as School of Laboratory Medicine and Biotechnology (SLMB).

SLMB has one post-doctoral program, two doctoral programs and three master’s programs in Basic Medicine and offers 3 undergraduate programs (or directions) in Biotechnology, Biotechnology (Biopharmaceutical) and Medical Laboratory Technology. Medical Laboratory Technology is a characteristic discipline both at provincial and national levels. In 2019, Medical Laboratory Technology and Biotechnology were approved by the Ministry of Education as national first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites.

The research and teaching laboratories cover an area of 3,200 m2, including a clean experimental area of 200 m2 which is above 10,000 class. The School boasts one national lab (the State Key Lab of Organ Failure Research), four centers (the State Center of Clinical Medicine Research on Infectious Disease, the Medical Prevention Center for Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Emergency of Ministry of Education, Guangdong Research Center of Emergency Technologies for Public Event, Guangdong Clinical Medical Research Center of Tuberculosis), and two innovation platforms (Guangdong Innovation Platform of Public Health, Guangdong Innovation Platform of Tuberculosis Translational Medicine).

There are 35 professional researchers in the School, including 16 with senior professional titles, and 16 with associate senior professional titles. 94.28% of the faculty have doctoral degrees, and 10 of them have more than one year’s experience of overseas study.

In the past five years, our faculty have undertaken 158 scientific research projects, including National Special Projects of Science and Technology, National Key R&D Programs, and National Natural Science Foundations of China, with the projects above provincial level accounting for 68.35%. The total fund of above-mentioned projects reaches more than RMB 99.33 million. Our faculty have published, as the first author or correspondent, 189 papers in SCI journals such as J Hepatol (IF 20.582), Adv SCI (IF 15.840), and EMBO J (IF 11.227). The total IF of above-mentioned papers reaches 717.368, with an average IF of 3.795 per paper. Furthermore, there are 31 authorized invention patents, among which 15 patents have been transferred into production. A second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award and a second prize of China Medical Science and Technology Award were obtained under the joint effort with other cooperators.

In the past five years, the teachers have presided 40 teaching reform projects, among which 18 are at provincial level, edited or co-edited 7 textbooks or monographs, published 19 teaching research papers, and achieved 8 teaching achievement awards, among which are 3 at provincial level.

SLMB has hosted 14 post-doctors who finished 14 research projects, including 5 National Foundation of Natural Science, 8 Chinese Postdoctoral Foundation of Science and 1 Guangdong Natural Foundation of Science. 35 doctors and 80 masters had graduated, of whom 1 was financed by Guangdong Special Program “Youth Talent of Science and Technology Innovation”, 1 acquired a Science Foundation for Outstanding Youth of Guangdong, and 4 was honored as Guangdong Excellent Graduate Students. The graduate students have published, as the first author, 111 papers on SCI journals. 623 undergraduates have been trained and 101 training programs of innovative entrepreneurship were obtained, including 15 at national level and 36 at provincial level. There are 4 authorized invention patents and 5 authorized utility patents. There are 44 scientific research papers published, among which 13 are on SCI journals.
