The School of Continuing Education of Southern Medical University (SMU) currently has four major divisions, namely the School Office, the Academic Education Department, the Training Department and the Self-study Examination Management Department. The School, with 15 regular staff members, is mainly responsible for developing continuing education, including vocational training, advanced studies, post-graduation medical education, adult education, and management of self-study examinations. The School serves as one of the key continuing medical training bases both locally and nationally. Specifically, it is a national medical training base accredited by the Ministry of Education, a national continuing medical education base recognized by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, one of the first pilot centers for standardized training of specialist physicians approved by the National Health Commission, a leading member unit of the Adult Education Group of the Medical Education Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and a standardized training and examination center of resident physicians in Guangdong Province.
The institute was initially started in 1999 and known then as the Department of Continuing Education of the First Military Medical University (FMMU) of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. It was renamed the School of Continuing Education of SMU in 2004 when the University’s predecessor, FMMU, was officially devolved to the administration of Guangdong Provincial Government. In 2013, the School was further enlarged by its merger with the School of Medical Vocational Technology, another secondary school of SMU then. Ever since its inception, the School of Continuing Education has been committed to developing quality continuing education featuring medicine, including vocational training, further education, correspondence education, pre-job training for newly recruited teachers, and selection of participants for the Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund Program and the like.
