Graduate education has been developing rapidly and vigorously over the past four decades at Southern Medical University (SMU) given its role as one of the leading pioneers and reformers in medical education and research in China. SMU was among the earliest nationally accredited institutions offering academic master’s programs in 1981 and doctoral programs in 1986, and among the first pilot higher institutions offering professional master’s and doctoral programs in Clinical Medicine in 1998 and 2000 respectively; it was in 2013 recognized by the country’s Ministry of Education as one of the first pilot institutions in implementing education reforms for professional master’s programs in Clinical Medicine in response to the increasing public demands for higher-quality health-care services.
In retrospect, SMU’s master’s program started in 1979, and its doctoral program set out in 1987. Having enjoyed some 40 years of continuous growth, SMU has established a full-fledged education system for preparing undergraduates, graduates on master’s and doctoral programs as well as post-doctoral researchers for their career success. Now at SMU, there are 10 doctoral disciplines and 60 sub-doctoral disciplines, 16 disciplines and 84 sub-disciplines for master’s programs, one professional doctoral program and 10 professional master’s programs. So far, about 6,300 doctoral students and some 20,000 master students have graduated from SMU, under the guidance of a large, high-level tutorial staff. There are altogether 1,842 tutors for graduate programs, including 224 tutors for academic & professional doctoral programs, 307 for academic doctoral programs, 172 for professional doctoral programs, as well as 458 more tutors for academic & professional master’s programs, 170 for academic master’s programs and 511 for professional master’s programs.
