Founded in July, 2016, General Education Department aims to provide an all-round education to produce well-rounded talents in Southern Medical University (SMU). The fundamental task of general education is to enhance students’ awareness of scientific values and ethics, enable them to articulate their personal and social values, and develop their ability to effectively work in group settings. It also strives to promote a people-oriented, high-quality and all-round education for undergraduates.
Currently, the Department has three teaching and research sections: the section of Physical Education, the section of Chinese Language and Literature, and the section of General Education. The Department owns 28 faculty members, including 2 professors and 5 associate professors. The faculty has undertaken a dozen more scientific research projects, including the National Social Science Fund and Philosophy and Social Science of Guangdong Province, and served as chief editors and deputy editors of national planning textbooks. In recently years, faculty members have published hundreds of research papers and held positions in more than ten national and provincial academic organizations.
The Department mainly offers school-wide courses such as Physical Education and Chinese Language and Literature, and will build a systematic core curriculum on medical humanities, providing students with a wide range of distinctive courses. It is the hope of the Department that students enjoy life-long learning process, explore their creativity, work with global and historical perspective and excel in their fields of interest.
