The School of Public Health, formerly the Department of Tropical Military Health in the First Military Medical University established in 1999, and the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in 2005, was renamed in April, 2016.

The School is home to 15 departments (centers or laboratories): Department of Epidemiology, Department of Biostatistics, Department of Occupational Health and Occupational Medicine, Department of Environmental Health, Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Department of Toxicology, Department of Radiation Medicine, Department of Pathogen Biology, Department of Microbiology, Department of Psychology, Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) Laboratory, Department of Inspection and Quarantine (Hygiene Detection Center), Food Safety and Health Research Center, Mental Health Education and Counselling Center, and Experimental Teaching Center for Preventive Medicine. 、

The School offers 4 undergraduate programs in Preventive Medicine, Applied Statistics, Applied Psychology and Psychological Medicine, 15 master’s degree programs, and 2 first-tier disciplines offering 14 MD programs.
Currently, the School has 131 faculty members with 42 professors and 48 associate professors. The School boasts an accomplished team with a number of outstanding experts and scholars, such as Famous Teachers in “National Ten Thousand Talents Plan”, the winners of Wu Jieping–Paul Janssen Medical & Pharmaceutical Award, the winners of Ding Ying Science and Technology Award, the winner of National Excellent Youth Award, the winners of Famous Teachers of Guangdong, the winners of Guangdong Excellent Teachers, the winners of FDA Scientific Achievement Awards, and the winners of FDA Awards for Excellence in Analytical Science.
The School has an enrollment of 1,662 full-time students, including 1,317 undergraduate students, 263 graduates and 82 doctoral students. Since 2005, 965 students have been awarded master’s degrees and 345 have been awarded doctoral degrees. Three doctoral students and two postgraduates were awarded “Guangdong Outstanding Students” in the past three years.
The School of Public Health enjoys excellent facilities. The School has Demonstration Base of Cultivation of Innovative Talents led by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Preventive Medicine sponsored by the Ministry of Education, and Innovation Pilot Zone for Cultivating Talents in Public Health Emergency of the Ministry of Education. The School also boasts a number of research centers and platforms at national, ministerial and provincial levels, including Medical Coping with Biochemical Nuclear Terrorism Engineering Research Center sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Science and Technology, National Research Center for Clinic Medicine, Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, and Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Tropical Diseases.

Since its founding, the School has developed very fast, making outstanding achievements in teaching and scientific research. Pharmacology and toxicology are among the top 1% of ESI global ranking. In the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, Public Health and Preventive Medicine were rated B+ in 2016, and both ranked sixth in China. Preventive Medicine was also selected as the national construction site of first-class undergraduate majors in 2019, and Applied Statistics as the provincial first-class undergraduate major’s construction site. Since 2008, the School has undertaken 197 projects, including National Key R&D Programs, American NIH projects, and National Natural Science Foundation projects, and received research grant totaling over RMB 110.073 million. The faculty has published 398 SCI-indexed papers in internationally renowned journals, such as NEJM, Nat Med, BMJ, Lancet Infect Dis, Ann Rheum Dis, PNAS, and Hepatology. Moreover, the School has won 14 national Science and Technology Awards and 14 provincial Science and Technology Awards. So far, the School has obtained 28 authorized patents, including 18 inventions.

In addition to the achievements of scientific research, the School attached great importance to teaching and teaching reforms. Preventive Medicine of the School is the characteristic specialty at national, ministerial and provincial levels and the Guangdong Province Key Specialty. Applied Psychology and Applied Statistics are honored as the Pilot Demonstration Zone for Comprehensive Reform, and Guangdong Province Innovative Talent Training Zone. 7 National Quality Engineering projects and 32 Provincial Quality Engineering projects have been undertaken. Moreover, the School has won the first prize of Guangdong Provincial Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award three times.

The School also encourages international exchange and cooperation, and has established long-term cooperation relationship with international organizations such as World Health Organization (WHO), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It has maintained close contact, exchange and cooperation with 18 colleges and universities, including Harvard University, Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, University of North Carolina, British College of Tropical Diseases, University of Sydney, La Trobe University, Griffith University, University of Auckland, Seoul University, University of Tokyo, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
