School of Pharmaceutical Sciences was founded in June, 2005. For many years, the School has adhered to the practice of connotation construction and the principle of focusing on teaching with the strategic objectives of collaboration, diversification and innovation. It strives towards its goal as an excellent research-oriented pharmaceutical school.
Since January in 2010, the School as one of the first pilot colleges of PI System in Southern Medical University has put “Principal Investigator System” (PI System) into trial use. From January 1, 2020, the School has employed a third round of PI System associated with the application and administration of the undergraduate teaching.
The School offers two undergraduate programs in Pharmacy (four-year) and Clinical Pharmacy (five-year), one professional master program and one academic master program both in Pharmacy. The School has also been approved to confer the doctoral degree in Pharmacy and the Postdoctoral Mobile Station for Pharmacy was established in 2009.
As a provincial brand specialty and provincial characteristic specialty, Pharmacy was selected as the national construction site of first-class undergraduate specialties in 2019, and was accredited for the Accreditation of Pharmaceutical Sciences in October, 2019. Clinical Pharmacy was also selected as the national construction site of first-class undergraduate specialties in 2020.
The School owns excellent facilities for teaching and scientific research, including one national key laboratory (State Key Laboratory of Drug Metabolism & Pharmacokinetics) and 3 key research platforms of Guangdong Province (Guangdong Key Laboratory of New Drug Screening, Guangdong Key Laboratory of Drug Metabolism & Pharmacokinetics in Special Populations and Guangdong Joint International Laboratory of New Drug Screening). The School has a National Demonstration and Postgraduate Training Center of Pharmacy and a Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
Currently, the School has 103 full-time faculty members, including 82 professional teachers, most of whom are young and middle-aged. There are 33 professors, 37 associate professors, 90.2% of whom held doctor degrees from famous universities at home and abroad, and 54.9% of whom had experience of studying or working abroad. The School has two winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, one recipient of the Young and Middle-aged Leading Talents in Science and Technology Innovation by the Ministry of Science and Technology, 2 people from the national Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project, 1 young and middle-aged expert with outstanding national contribution and 2 teachers awarded with Guangdong Excellent Teachers.
In recent five years, the School has undertaken 227 projects at national, provincial and ministerial levels, including national science and technology major projects, projects supported by the Regional Innovation and Development Joint Fund of National Natural Science Foundation, “New Drug Creation and Development” Major Scientific and Technological Project of Guangdong Province, and Guangdong Province Key R&D Programs, with a total funding of RMB 168 million. The faculty members have published more than 580 scientific research papers in SCI-indexed journals and applied 130 national and international PCT patents with 76 authorized. The School has won one second prize of Science and Technology Achievement Award from Guangdong Province Pharmaceutical Association.
The faculty members are also vigorously engaged in educational research. They have undertaken 19 educational research projects at national, ministerial and provincial levels, won one second prize of Guangdong Provincial Teaching Achievement Award, published 56 high quality papers on teaching issues, and edited 29 textbooks.
Chemistry is among the top 1% of ESI global ranking in May, 2020, and Pharmacological Toxicology ranks top 0.25% in November, 2020.
