The School of Biomedical Engineering established in 1986 is among the earliest units to establish a biomedical engineering program, which has evolved as the largest biomedical engineering discipline in terms of undergraduate training in China. It has formed a complete talent cultivation system of B.E.-M.E.-D.E.-Postdoctoral. It has been evaluated as the first category of specialties in higher education by the Ministry of Education and the national first-class undergraduate specialty construction site.
The School has 116 faculty members and a number of high-level talents represented by Chang Jiang Distinguished Scholars, national teaching masters, winners of NSF for Distinguished Young Scholars, winners of NSF for Outstanding Young Scholars, Pearl River Distinguished Professors, etc.
The School offers undergraduate programs in biomedical engineering (including medical imaging engineering, medical information engineering, and biomaterials) and innovation class of excellence (30 students/year for the Joint Bachelor cum Master’s Study Program). It has won the second prize of National Teaching Achievement twice, and the rate of undergraduates entering schools of a higher level is 34% and the employment rate is over 95%. Students have a rosy future and they are employed by Philips, GE, Siemens, Johnson & Johnson, Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital, Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nanfang Hospital, Zhujiang Hospital and other famous enterprises and hospitals, or recruited for further study by Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Fudan University, Sun Yat-sen University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Connecticut, University of Dundee and other universities at home and abroad.
The School’s faculty members are mainly engrossed in research in medical imaging and analysis, radiation physics, medical instrumentation, medical information, and biomaterials. It has built 7 research platforms above the provincial level, including the Engineering Center of the Ministry of Education and the Provincial Key Laboratory. Over the past five years, it has undertaken more than 53 national projects, such as the major and key projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, Special Fund for Basic Research on Scientific Instruments of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Key Technology Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, and China National Key R&D Program during the 13th Five-year Plan Period. The faculty members have won 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Invention Award, 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, and more than 10 provincial and ministerial awards. With the annual publication of more than 100 SCI papers, the research level of medical imaging and analysis remains at the leading level in China.
