School of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Formerly known as the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine established in July 1975 of the First Military Medical University (FMMU) of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, then as the Institute of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine in 1986, the only base for training senior talents in traditional Chinese medicine, traditional Chinese herbal medicine and Chinese and Western integrative medicine in the entire army, integrating teaching, research and medicine, the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (STCM) was established in June 2005 after FMMU was officially devolved to the administration of Guangdong Province.

There are 3 first-level disciplines: Traditional Chinese Medicine, Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine, and Chinese and Western Integrative Medicine. The clinical integrative medicine has become the key discipline of Guangdong Province and the national key discipline. Now the School has 6 key disciplines, 4 key specialties and 3 third-level research laboratories of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

STCM has 132 faculty members and 15 post-doctoral fellows. Among them, 40 faculty members have senior titles and 40 associate senior titles, with 76% of them holding doctoral degrees. The School boasts 3 experts enjoying special government allowances of the State Council, 1 national outstanding teacher, 1 national teaching master of higher education in Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 national Qihuang scholar, 1 national young Qihuang scholar, 1 national outstanding educator, 2 provincial teaching masters and 2 outstanding teachers in Guangdong. In recent years, young teachers of the School have won 8 first prizes in national teaching competitions.

STCM offers 3 master degree programs in Traditional Chinese and Western Integrative Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine, 2 doctor degree programs in Traditional Chinese and Western Integrative Medicine and Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine, five undergraduate programs in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Clinical Integrative Medicine, Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine and TCM Pharmaceuticals, and a special program in Traditional Chinese Medicine (Famous Senior TCM Doctor Inheritance Class). At present, there are nearly 2,000 undergraduates and 200 postgraduates, which makes it one of the largest schools in China in terms of training TCM talents. The 3 specialties of Clinical Integrative Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine have been approved as the first batch of national first-class program construction sites. Over the past few years, the passing rate of our undergraduates in national qualification examination for medical practitioners has come out at the top, and the passing rate in national qualification examination for TCM medical practitioner ranked first in China.

In the past five years, the faculty members have undertaken and participated in 320 scientific research projects at provincial and ministerial levels, including 196 national programs, with a total funding of over RMB 98 million. In recent five years, 973 journal papers have been published, including 217 SCI papers. In addition, 48 national inventions were granted and 20 patents have been assigned. The School has received 10 science and technology awards at or above the provincial and ministerial level.

Since 1999, STCM has accepted international students from more than 30 countries, including Hungary, Thailand, Korea, Germany and Spain. It has also sent a number of experts to Cuba, Sweden, Kuwait, Syria, and the United Kingdom for lecture assistance, and in 2018, it also excelled in China’s Medical Aid in Africa sponsored by the National Health Commission. The School has established good academic exchanges and connections with universities or research institutions in the United States (Yale University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Duke University, etc.), Singapore (National University of Singapore), New Zealand (Auckland University), Australia (Labradorham University, Monash University), etc. Every year it sends more than 10 teachers abroad for study visits and academic exchanges.

In 2006, the School built the TCM-Integrated Hospital directly affiliated to Southern Medical University and it passed the accreditation as a first-class hospital at Grade A in 2014. At present, the School has more than 70 experts participating in medical visits of many hospitals directly affiliated to the University, such as Nanfang Hospital, Zhujiang Hospital, and other affiliated hospitals. The School has unique medical advantages in the treatment of brain diseases and kidney diseases with TCM therapeutics.
