Since its establishment in 2005, the School of Basic Medical Sciences (SBMS) has implemented the education quality improvement project and constantly promoted the reform of talent cultivation mode. The School has been rated as the “Advanced Unit in National Education System” and the faculty team of basic medicine has been credited as one of the models of National High Quality Professional Innovative Team (Huang Danian-type Faculty Team).

SBMS has a galaxy of talents. In the past ten years, the School has introduced more than 40 high-level talents from both at home and abroad to work full-time here. Presently there are 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 national teaching masters, 3 national model teachers and national outstanding teachers, 16 national talents such as “Chang Jiang Scholars”, winners of NSF for Distinguished Young Scholars, chief scientists of National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), 13 national young talent program recipients, 18 teachers enjoying “special government allowances of the State Council”.

SBMS fosters excellence in disciplinary construction. Presently there are 1 national key discipline, 1 national key construction discipline, a key laboratory of the Ministry of Education for mental health research and 8 key laboratories of Guangdong Province. We have built post-doctoral research stations in basic medicine and biology which are first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees. In 2019, the School took the lead in organizing 18 universities and research institutions in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao to build Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Center for Brain Science and Brain-Inspired Intelligence with the approval of authorities of Guangdong Province. Since 2005, the School has undertaken 1,017 competitive research projects including 578 national research projects with a total funding of RMB 530 million. The key projects are as many as 81. For example, the major and key projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Key Technology Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, National Program on Key Basic Research Project of China (973 Program) and National High-tech R&D Program of China (863 Program), Program for Chang Jiang Scholars and Innovative Research Team in University of the Ministry of Education of China, etc. As the leading unit, the School has won 14 scientific and technological achievements at provincial and ministerial level, including 2 second prizes of National Natural Science Awards, 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Outstanding Contribution Award, and 5 first prizes of Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Awards. Faculty members have published 1,578 SCI papers in Cell, Nature Cell Biology, Nature Genetics, Cell Stem Cell, Blood, Nature Chemical Biology and other journals with corresponding authorship, including 100 papers with impact factor over 10 (69 papers with first authorship). Four disciplines, including Biology and Biochemistry, Neuroscience and Behavior, Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Immunology, have been ranked in the top 1% of the world ESI.

The School retains a clear edge in program construction. In 2020, the School was awarded as the Base of Excellence 2.0 in Basic Disciplines by the Ministry of Education, and 2 undergraduate programs in Basic Medicine and Bioinformatics were among the first batch of national first-class undergraduate programs. Supported by a national experimental teaching demonstration center and a national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, the School offers 3 national quality courses, 2 national first-class offline courses and 2 national bilingual teaching demonstration courses. In 2019, the School initiated the Academician Innovation Class in which a full tutorial system has been established. The number of undergraduates and doctoral students is nearly 1,300, and the ratio of postgraduates to undergraduates is greater than 1. We have edited a series of high-quality textbooks, including National Planning Textbook for Medical Education during the 12th Five-Year Plan. Among the graduates, 2 have been awarded as National Outstanding Teacher and Master Teacher, 9 have been awarded as winners of NSF for Distinguished Young Scholars, and 5 have been awarded the National May 1st Labor Medal and other national honors.

With above, the School has achieved remarkable results in serving the society. Relying on the advantages of discipline, talents and technology, the School has been committed to a series of social service projects such as China Aerospace Engineering, prevention and control of the COVID-19, and drug development for depression. Hence SBMS is a beautiful name card of SMU.
