
Founded in 1947 and handed over with the University to Guangdong Provincial Government in August, 2004, Zhujiang Hospital is also known as the Second Affiliated Hospital and the Second School of Clinical Medicine of Southern Medical University (formerly the First Military Medical University). As a high-level hospital construction unit in Guangdong Province, it has now evolved into a modern, comprehensive national-level hospital that integrates healthcare, medical teaching, scientific research and prevention. The hospital covers an area of 99,300 square meters, with a building area of 362,000 square meters, and 2,600 beds. Enlisted in the first batch of first-class specialty construction institutions in the country and Guangdong Province, it has a first level academic discipline in clinical medicine entitled to confer doctoral degrees, a post-doctoral research station, 23 national and provincial key clinical specialties, 21 national key cultivation disciplines, and 2 medical quality control centers in Guangdong Province. With 3 specialist training bases and 10 national training platforms, it is one of the first national training bases for standardized residency training and general practitioner training. The hospital has 3,469 professional and technical staff in total, 500 experts with senior titles, 118 postdoctoral co-supervisors, 144 doctoral supervisors and 97 master’s supervisors. The hospital has built a domestic first-class “Pearl River Specialist Medical Alliance” remote collaboration and three-dimensional transfer network and a provincial medical data platform. Boasting 12 provincial and ministerial-level research platforms, 25 drug specialties and 45 device specialties in national drug clinical trial institutions, the hospital is taking the lead in research in microbiomics, digital medicine and regenerative medicine both at home and abroad.
