Nanfang Hospital, also known as the First Affiliated Hospital and the First School of Clinical Medicine of Southern Medical University (formerly the First Military Medical University), was handed over with the University to Guangdong Provincial Government in August, 2004. It has now evolved into a modern, comprehensive first-class hospital at Grade A that integrates health care, medical teaching, scientific research, prevention and healthcare, ranking among the top 100 Chinese hospitals. With 3,601 beds in the headquarters, the hospital has five branch hospitals in Zengcheng, Zhishicheng, Jianggao, Baiyun, and Taihe respectively. In addition, it is among the first key institutions of the “Peak Plan” of high-level hospital construction in Guangdong Province, “National Promotion Project of Diagnosis and Treatment of Difficult Diseases”, “National Trauma Center for Regional Healthcare”, and the regional diagnosis and treatment centers for rheumatology by TCM. With 14 key national-level clinical specialties and 3 key specialties of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, currently it has 5,969 professional and technical personnel, including 881 personnel with senior titles, 173 doctoral supervisors, and 203 master’s supervisors. The culture of the pursuit of excellence and public service is a key consciousness which exists in good measure among our galaxy of talents. Now, we have 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 dual-employed academicians, 4 winners of NSF for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 winners of NSF for Outstanding Young Scholars, 1 Changjiang Scholar, and 1 ChangjiangYoung Scholar. The hospital has a doctoral degree program in clinical medicine and a post-doctoral station in clinical medicine; internal medicine (gastroenterology) is listed as a national key discipline, and surgery (orthopaedics) as a national key cultivation discipline. Also, Nanfang Hospital is equipped with the State Key Laboratory of Organ Failure Research, the National Clinical Research Center for Kidney Disease, Guangdong Institute of Nephrology, Guangdong Institute of Liver Disease, Guangdong Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics, and Nanfang Institute of Digestive Diseases.
