School of Pediatrics was officially established in 2019 and developed from Zhujiang Hospital (the Second School of Clinical Medicine) of SMU, one of the first batch of first-class hospitals at Grade A in China and a key hospital in “the Construction Project of High-level Hospitals” in Guangdong Province. In 2017, the School started offering undergraduate programs based on small classes, and the Pediatrics was selected as a construction site for national first-class undergraduate specialty and for provincial experimental teaching demonstration center. With OBE as the guide, the School has been exploring the reform of student-centered teaching methods since then. By offering the early clinical curriculum, the School always aims at cultivating pediatric professionals to meet the development of national medicine and health care.
The School boasts of its pediatrics, which is a national key clinical specialty and Guangdong key clinical specialty. There are Guangdong Treatment Center of Critically Ill Newborns in the Department of Pediatrics, and there are also one of the pilot national standardized training bases for residents and one of the pilot standardized training bases for specialists. The new pediatric medical center covers an area of 11,000m2 and accommodates 352 beds. With 8 subspecialties and 19 subspecialties, the School has been the largest pediatric center among first-class hospitals at Grade A in South China.
